Hi, This is Balu May 15, 2008

Some telemarketer keeps calling me and reading the same script. Our phone system sends me my voicemails as WAVs. Ivan told me to overlay them. Remix feat. Radiohead.

Sigur Rós Video Contest November 20, 2007

This is great. Sigur Rós is letting people download leftover clips from their film, Heima, to remix and upload to their YouTube channel.

I only wish they had used Vimeo HD instead of YouTube, the videos of Iceland are stunning in hi-res. This is what I mean.

The Conet Project September 6, 2007

I have been listening to the 4 discs of The Conet Project. For some reason, I’m fascinated with listening to these recordings of numbers stations, weird, I know. Wilco fans will recognize disc 1, track 4. Download for free here.

It’s “Zodiac”, not “The Zodiac”. August 14, 2007

Last night, Meredith rented “The Zodiac”, and we watched the whole thing, thinking it was “Zodiac”. Note, The Zodiac is a COMPLETELY different movie from Zodiac. Both are about the Zodiac killer, and both were released relatively close together (2005 and 2007), but what the hell?? How confusing.

“Weird, I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was in this movie.”
“Yeah, so did I. Maybe he’s the Zodiac killer, yeah, I bet he’s the killer, just wait, he’ll come out.”
“But…they never caught the Zodiac killer…”
…and then the movie ends right there.

I’m surprised the producers of Infamous didn’t call it “The Capote”.

Me Eating a Habanero Burger August 9, 2007

Dennis found this old animated gif of me eating the famous Prince of Wales Habanero Burger about 8 years ago. They made you sign a waiver before eating the burger, and it hurts just as bad, um, coming out, as it does going in. I did, however, get a bright orange bumper sticker to commemorate the night, and subsequent morning, of intestinal agony. Alas, Prince of Wales Pub has since closed.

Crosswalk Sting Operation in Sausalito July 20, 2007

Crosswalk Sting Operation in Sausalito, originally uploaded by andrewyang.

This is what went down right outside my window at FM this morning.
Read about it here.
1. Sausalito PD and CHP wait in the wings, ready to strike down with no mercy on offenders
2. Three highly trained decoys, Agents Green, White, and Red, move East-West, West-East direction across 2nd St., then repeat
3. Special Agent J. Garcia provides videotaped evidence of offenders, and also serves as a distraction to would be offenders "Holy shit it’s Jerry! Ahh! Watch out for that pedestrian!"
4. We all cheer loudly whenever a suspect is apprehended, this is almost as much fun as watching bugs in the bug zapper
Also see Andre’s vantage point.

Dennis in the WSJ! July 14, 2007

Dennis is featured in a video on the The Wall Street Journal about the 10 year anniversary of blogging. Cory Doctorow and David Pescovitz are also featured in a video about Boing Boing, which happens to be one of Mia Farrow’s favorite blogs. Mia Farrow’s other favorite blog is… GPSmagazine.
Congrats, Dennis!

Ok fine, I gave in and got one. July 1, 2007

Ok fine, I gave in and got one., originally uploaded by andrewyang.

I gave in and got an iPhone yesterday. First impressions? So far so good.
I had to upgrade iTunes and my OS before I could activate it, so that took a while to download. However, activation was pretty painless, except for the fact that I lost the discount that I had on my plan (oh well). Also, the SMS options that AT&T offers are pretty weird. 200 text messages/month come standard, or you can pay $10.00/month for 1500 messages.

YouTube is GREAT on the iPhone, over WiFi, at least. I’ve been using it primarily with WiFi, and it’s fast. I’m kinda nervous about the drastic change when I start using EDGE.

Also, I was impressed with the double-tap zooming in Safari. When you double tap on an area, it looks like it makes an intelligent guess on the level of zoom that is uses. (I think it’s using CSS elements to make the guess, not sure about this, though) For instance, if you tap on a paragraph, it will zoom in so that the left and right boundaries of the paragraph are a the left and right boundaries of the screen. NICE. Subtle, thoughtful touches like these are what I love about Apple.

Typing with two hands using your thumbs is harder than I expected. In the Apple demo video, they make it look so easy - except, the iPhone in the video is floating in mid-air as the guy types. Mine didn’t come with the levitation feature.
In reality, I’ve found that it’s especially hard to hold the iPhone with two hands and type at the same time when the keyboard is in vertical (portrait) orientation because it’s so narrow. I expected it to allow use of the keyboard horizontally in all cases, as that would have made it much easier to hold and type.
Also, I wish they had included at least some punctuation (a period would have been nice) in the "letter" mode of the keyboard. It takes a lot of switching back and forth.
A few other things have been echoed by many others; no IM, no cut and paste, no Flash. Hopefully these will all come in future updates…
